The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP), with its headquarter in Garching near
Munich, operates a stellarator-type fusion experiment, the Wendelstein 7-x (W7-x), at its site in Greifswald (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). W7-x has the task of demonstrating the suitability of the stellarator as a desirable alternative to the tokamak on the way to a fusion power plant.
