Expression of Interest are invited for Assessment of The Recycling Potential in The Greater Banjul Area (GBA) and Associated Markets, Pathways to Integrate Waste-Pickers in The Formal System and Gender Analysis.

The activities under this consultancy planned under ProBlue, a new multi-donor trust fund housed at the World Bank that supports sustainable and integrated development of marine and coastal resources in healthy oceans, will include the following (i) assess the recycling potential in GBA, including identification of the different waste materials that can be recovered through recycling of composing, estimation of the current recovery rates and assessment of the potential to increase these rates and enhance recycling initiatives; (ii) profile the informal and formal recycling sector; (iii) identify opportunities and challenges to strengthen and increase revenues and resilience of informal recycling sector, maximize employment and enterprise formalization in the recycling and waste sectors, create recycling linkages to the formal sector, improve the quality of life and provide livelihood alternatives for waste pickers living and working on dumpsites, reduce leakage of plastic into the environment; (iv) develop a strategy based on the opportunities and challenges across the informal recycling sector and associated enabling environment in a gender sensitive manner (including a gender analysis); and (v) integrate with parallel activities addressing upstream policy, broader waste management system modernization and a circular economy for plastic waste.
