Tender Details

The World Bank, in collaboration with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA), seeks a multidisciplinary firm to assess the soil carbon sequestration potential and socio-economic readiness for carbon projects in two protected areas of Mpumalanga: Songimvelo and Manyeleti Nature Reserves. The assignment will (i) generate robust, IPCC-aligned soil organic carbon (SOC) baselines through field sampling, laboratory analysis, and geospatial modeling, and evaluate the technical feasibility of registering carbon credits; and (ii) conduct a comprehensive stakeholder and community engagement assessment to determine willingness, capacity, governance arrangements, and benefit-sharing options for implementing carbon sequestration activities. Outputs include an inception report, field and QA/QC report, SOC & feasibility report, stakeholder readiness report, carbon valuation brief, a final synthesis report, and dissemination materials. The contract duration is seven months, with milestone-based payments tied to accepted deliverables. Firms must demonstrate strong technical capacity in soil science, carbon accounting/MRV, GIS/remote sensing, environmental economics, and participatory social research in South Africa or comparable contexts.
