Tender Details

Agricultural & Livelihood Specialist.

Background:
The Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF) is an international NGO established in several
countries such as Côte d`Ivoire, Guinea and Liberia. WCF has been in operation since 2000 for
the conservation of chimpanzees and other biodiversity in West Africa. One of WCF’s main
target areas is the Taï-Grebo-Krahn-Sapo Forest Complex, the largest remaining relatively
intact forest block that spans across the Ivorian and Liberian border, encompassing various
protected areas (Taï National Park and Cavally Classified Forest in Côte d’Ivoire; and Sapo
National Park and the Grebo-Krahn National Park in Liberia) and identified conservation
landscape corridors. Furthermore, WCF is active in the Krahn-Bassa Proposed Protected Area
and is leading on various national initiatives with numerous partners.
USAID, through the West Africa Biodiversity and Climate Change (WA BiCC) program, is
one of WCF’s major donors in Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. Awareness-raising, research, law
enforcement, capacity-building, ecotourism as well as livelihoods projects are among the
activities funded through the WA BiCC program. The livelihood projects are very diverse and
include: bee-keeping and honey production, cassava and inland valley swamp rice farming,
chicken and pig farms, cocoa, as well as market-gardening.

Objective of the mission: WCF aims at keeping the environmental impact of its activities to a minimum, while aiming at maximum compliance with forest and biodiversity conservation and long-term sustainability of projects. Hence, it was decided to keep cultures and farms as organic and conservation-friendly as possible. The mission of the Agricultural & Livelihood Specialist will thus be to find locally fit ways and production processes to ensure the best efficiency of agricultural projects while avoiding chemicals as much as possible through the use of permacultures and organic, conservation-friendly techniques for instance. The experts might also have to help beneficiaries to select better-producing types of plants, and to support the long-term sustainability of projects. Therefore, after a project assessment and evaluation visit to the field in Liberia and in Côte d’Ivoire, which will enable the expert to identify the strong points and potential issues faced by each of WCF’s livelihood projects, the expert is expected to present recommendations based on past experience, best practices and bibliographic research, and then to present an implementation plan for the suggested amendments of each project. The consultancy will cover a period of 3 to 4 months.

Profile of the candidate:
The expert is required to:
- Have a master-level degree in agriculture, agronomy, or any other relevant area;
- At least 10 years of experience in tropical food-producing agriculture, as well as in
commonly farmed animals and plants (especially in Africa);
- At least 5 years of experience in farmers’ training in rural areas;
- A good knowledge of organic and conservation-friendly certifications, procedures and
techniques;
- A good knowledge of community-based development project as well as individual
income-generating activities in rural areas;
- A good knowledge of NGO processes and ways of working.

The application must be emailed to the following addresses until August, 25
th 2019:
