Based on the international state of science and technology, Germany is pursuing the goal of disposing of highly radioactive waste in a deep geological repository. At the same time, BASE continually examines possible options in accordance with its legal mandate Alternatives to deep geological disposal, including partitioning and transmutation (P and T). In the area of transmutation, technological developments must therefore be assessed in terms of their scientific robustness and safety-related relevance check. Most recently, a BASE statement on the SPRIN D implementation study showed that uncertainties exist in the transmutation of cleavage and activation products. This applies, for example, to separation processes and target production Transmutation rates and times as well as the technological maturity of the individual and the entire system. Internationally, the topic of P and T is being investigated in the EU project TRANSPARANT (2024 to 2028) and in the ARPA E program NEWTON (since 2024). The focal points These programs focus on fuels with so-called “minor actinides” (e.g. neptunium, americium, curium) as well as on the further development of suitable separation processes, irradiation targets, particle sources and process chains for transmutation. For The following thirteen activation and fission products are particularly important for the long-term safety of a repository C14, Cl36, Ni59, Se79, Sr90, Zr93, Nb94, Tc99, Pd107, Ag108m, Sn126, I129, Cs135. These radionuclides are used in safety analyzes for the Host rocks clay rock, rock salt and granite are considered to be significant for potential radionuclide emissions. The influence of different current nuclear data and self-shielding effects in irradiation targets on transmutation efficiency These radionuclides have not yet been systematically investigated, although in P and T scenarios that aim to reduce the transuranium inventory through fission...
