A key challenge in the assessment of wind farms is avoiding and mitigating risks to wildlife, especially birds and bats, which can be at risk of colliding with wind turbines. Migration routes, flight paths, and temporal patterns of these species- movements are not always well-understood, particularly for nocturnal, highly mobile and migratory species. Leveraging existing flight movement data and radar infrastructure to map and monitor the overland flight movements of Australian birds and bats will deliver knowledge and tools to support faster and better assessment of onshore wind farms. The department requires the delivery of up to three deliverables : A. (Required) (1) Research Report on overland bird and bat flight movements based on known and existing research. • Description of bird and bat species that undertake land migration in Australia. • Overview of main overland flyways and flight paths used, known spatial and temporal flight patterns, knowledge gaps and priorities for research. • Identify references, studies and data for collation into national bird and bat movement digital tool. (2) Centralised database and digital tool for bird and bat movement data to capture and visualise Australian bird and bat movement data. • Capable of handling multiple data types obtained by various methodologies used to collect data on bird and bat flight movements • Public facing and capable of handling external data integration, including a portal for addition of data from external sou...
