develop greener Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration and Test (MAIT) processes which allow future missions to reduce the environmental impact.DescriptionEnvironmental impact assessment is required in many ESA and commercial projects (i.e. Copernicus Expansion missions, Galileo Second Generation, Ariane Next, etc). In order to assess the environmental impact of a mission, all its phases need to be assessed. This also allows for identification of hotspots (areas of environmental improvement) and improvement of processes which can reduce the overall environmental impact of the future missions.Space applications make use of space specific manufacturing processes and extensive and high energetic tests. Previous ESA activities have been performed to assess the environmental impact of some space specific materials, manufacturing processes and equipment which has led to the creation of the ESA LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) Database. This database, even if incomplete, is being used by European space industry to assess the environmental impact of their missions. The environmental impact of most Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration Test (MAIT) activities has been identified by European space industry as one of the major gaps of the current available LCA of space missions, jeopardizing the entire quality of the assessment. Space industry is requesting ESA to include this assessment in the ESA LCA Database as this is considered critical to have reliable environmental assessment both at equipment and system level and to facilitate the work done at project level. Furthermore, the identification of greener alternatives is deemed necessary to accomplish the Agenda 2025.This activity builds upon previous work done by ESA on the ESA LCA Database and generic LCA databases for terrestrial applications already existing(i.e. ecoinvent). This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Perform an assessment of the environmental impacts of the MAIT at equipment level of different types of equipment representative of typical space platforms (i.e. electronic units, solar array, structures, propulsion systems, batteries, harness)- Analyse the source of environmental impact for each of the MAIT processes studied- Propose solutions for environmental impact reduction- Define a methodology to extrapolate the data for testing at system level or devise a specific approach is needed- Analyse the capacity for impact reduction at system level- Select the study case with higher potential for reduction- Eco-design and demonstrate the selected study CASE.
