The Enriquillo region occupies the far southwest of the Dominican Republic, spanning four provinces — Pedernales, Barahona, Bahoruco, and Independencia — and three national parks: Jaragua, Sierra de Bahoruco, and Lago Enriquillo & Isla Cabritos. Together these protected areas form the UNESCO-designated Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve, centered on Lake Enriquillo — the Caribbean's largest lake and a Ramsar site since 2002. The region's natural endowment is exceptional: Bahía de las Águilas, widely regarded as one of the most pristine beaches in the Caribbean; Laguna de Oviedo, a high-salinity lagoon supporting large populations of flamingos, iguanas, and herons; Hoyo de Pelempito, a dramatic canyon overlook in the Sierra de Bahoruco; and the arid and semi-arid landscapes of the Enriquillo basin, whose microclimate and biodiversity profile are unique in the CaribbeaThis consultancy focuses on the southern portion of this territory — referred to throughout as Enriquillo Sur — encompassing the province of Pedernales and the adjacent coastal and interior zones accessible from it. This is where the government's flagship tourism investment is concentrated and where the potential for near-term tourism development is greatest.
