Early childhood is a critical stage of growth requiring sufficient nutrition to support cognitive development, immunity, and physical well-being. However, many Filipino children continue to experience undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency, and growth delays linked to limited food access and inappropriate feeding practices. Day care children are especially vulnerable, as malnutrition at this stage can result in irreversible developmental impacts and poor school readiness.
The Supplementary Feeding Program (SFP), implemented in partnership between the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Local Government Units (LGUs), is a strategic intervention designed to improve the nutritional status of day care children by providing hot meals or nutritious food supplements for 120 feeding days.
