Health systems change strategies aim to screen every patient for tobacco/nicotine use and offer every tobacco/nicotine user help to quit at every visit. Health systems change is focused on making changes throughout the health system. Changes may include revising organizational policies, administrative and clinical processes, information technologies, staff training, performance feedback, and quality improvement initiatives to support tobacco/nicotine use treatment. The goal is to make screening and treatment automatic, rather than depending on providers to remember to act. Effective components of health systems change includes:Raising awareness among healthcare leadership, providers, and staff on the importance of treating tobacco/nicotine useIntegrating tobacco/nicotine screening and treatment into the existing workflowReferring patients to nicotine-dependency quitting resourcesCreating reminders for staff to treat tobacco/nicotine use (e.g., EHR alerts or medical chart stickers)Documenting cessation treatment and sharing results with providers and staff as part of quality improvement initiativesReimbursing providers for tobacco/nicotine use treatmentComponents I & IIEligible applicants may include, but are not limited to, healthcare clinics, hospital systems, and other organizations that provide healthcare treatment services in communities throughout the state. Applicants must have state or federal recognition as a formal organization or entity, such as a Federal Employer Identification Number or 501c3 status. Applicants must be located in and conduct grant activities in the state of Mississippi. Applicants must not be suspended or prohibited from working with any state or federal entity.
