The SME Ventures Program ("SMEV" or “The Program”) is a part of the International Finance Corporation's (“IFC”) private equity funds department ("CDFPE"). It focuses on investing in private equity funds that specifically target small and medium-sized enterprises (“SMEs”) in Low Income IDA, Fragile and Conflict Affected States ("IDA-FCS") as well as other frontier markets. Currently, SMEV has invested in a diverse portfolio of 26 funds operating in over 30 countries worldwide. In addition to financial investments, the program also provides Technical Assistance ("TA") to the fund managers.
Most of the fund managers under The Program, like many other fund managers in frontier markets, need to create and reinforce good practices to excel post-investment and require support in driving value creation* activities in their portfolio. And, as part of its support to fund managers, SMEV offers TA to help them implement value creation initiatives (“TA Project”).
The objective of this project is to enhance the performance and value creation capabilities of 11 SMEV fund managers in frontier markets, leading to increased access to value creation for portfolio companies and their improved performance. The ultimate goal is to observe improved performance of portfolio companies, measured by indicators such as increased revenue and profitability, and achieving successful exits.
