Description:

Overview:
The main objective of this consultancy under the GCCA+ project aims at supporting adaptation to climate change to increase coastal and flood protection in the vulnerable areas of La Digue Island. This consultancy will focus on the issues of coastal flooding and salt water intrusion onto agricultural land as well as underground water aquifers on the island.
The scope of work under this consultancy will be to identify the sites where saltwater intrusion is occurring, setting up of permanent monitoring sites as well as appropriate mitigation measures to prevent salt water intrusion at identified locations. These are described in more details in the sections below. Appropriate structures will also be installed at outlets identified by the Drainage Task Force.
Component 4 will involve salt water intrusion mapping, through dedicated water sampling from outlets of marshes and determining salt water intrusion intensity, study and survey of borehole recharge, hydrology and volumetric analysis of direct borehole recharge via usage. It will also involve the design construction of non-return dykes across identified wetland bodies. This will include the engineered design, costing, Environmental Assessment and tendering for construction of the two dykes. At least 1 Long term monitoring stations for saltwater intrusion will be installed and capacity build for the monitoring to be conducted locally.
