The research focuses on restoring the nutrient balance in dry heathland that has been dug up in the past. Previous turf management has led to a reduction in nitrogen, but also to increased phosphorus limitation and reduced availability of basic cations, with negative consequences for flora and fauna. As a result, many damaged heathland vegetations have remained species-poor. Paddition, whether or not combined with recovery of basic cations, is seen as a possible follow-up measure. The However, its applicability, effectiveness and sustainability have not yet been sufficiently developed. The research must provide insight into: • The current status of nitrogen, phosphorus and buffering in pegged and chopped dry heathland; • The long-term effects of Paddition and any buffer restoration measures on soil, vegetation and fauna; • The circumstances under which Paddition can be applied effectively, safely and sustainably.
