Provision of a Canadian Long Range Identification and Tracking LRIT National Data Centre (NDC) Service.
Background:
The Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) of ships was established as an international system in 2006 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to track all Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)-class vessels. LRIT regulations [MSC.202 (81)] apply to all passenger ships, including high-speed crafts engaged on international voyages, cargo ships, mobile offshore drilling units and vessels 300 gross tonnages and above.
The LRIT system, over the past four years, has allowed Canada to enhance its maritime security via improved Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA). The goal of LRIT is to implement a maritime security system that will enhance Canada-s ability to track Canadian SOLAS Vessels, identify foreign SOLAS-class vessels that are transiting within Canadian coastal waters out to 1, 000 Nautical Miles (NM) and for vessels who have intended to enter Canadian port.
