Effective January 1, 2025, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Information System 2.0 (WIS 2.0) officially enters its operational phase, marking a significant advancement in global data sharing. This milestone initiates a transformation that will ultimately replace the Global TelecommunicationSystem (GTS), WMO's data-sharing backbone that has reliably served the global weather forecasting community since 1971. Built on open standards and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, this new real-time data-sharing framework dramatically improves how Members access and share Earth system data, including atmospheric, oceanic, hydrological, cryosphere, and other environmental observations and information.The system's cloud-ready approach and use of widely adopted open standards eliminate the need for specialized equipment and expensive local infrastructure, making robust data-sharing capabilitiesaccessible to developing countries, LDCs, and SIDS.The successful operation of WIS2 depends on a reliable and robust network of Global Services, ensuring the highest levels of availability.
