Project competition Køge Bugt Strandpark Strandparken is designed as a coastal protection project with a 7 km long dike that secures the surrounding urban areas in Hvidovre, Brøndby, Vallensbæk, Greve and Ishøj Municipalities against rising water levels. The project at the same time created natural areas where a very rich and varied wildlife has emerged in and around dammed lakes, meadows, dunes and beach areas. The whole area has great recreational value with green areas, paths, lakes and beaches for leisure and educational activities, sports and cultural events. The beach park is connected by a 10 km long main path that links the area lengthwise, supplemented by smaller paths that create connections to marinas, dune areas, adjacent residential areas etc. The area's recreational use is supported by a number of smaller buildings, which include contains cafes, ice cream kiosks, toilets, depots, etc. The buildings are the original ones from when Strandparken was built, and they are very run down and no longer exist contemporary. In the coming years, the coastal protection project must be expanded so that the dikes are raised by one meter so that they can withstand the future expected water level rises. The coastal protection project is not directly part of the project competition. A. P. Møller Foundation has donated funds for the modernization and development of the area's recreational facilities in the form of its buildings, coastal facilities and trail systems.
