Request for Information (RFI): Veterans Health Administration (VHA)Sterile Cleaning Supplies for Pharmacy Compounding ProgramsThe Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is conducting a market survey and is seeking information identifying sterile cleaning supplies for pharmacy compounding programs. Pursuant to VHA Directive 1108.12, Management and Monitoring of Pharmaceutical Compounded Sterile Preparations, VHA Pharmacy Compounding programs are required to apply the standards of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Chapters 795, 797, and 800 as well as all other applicable chapters to the practice of compounding sterile and non-sterile preparations. The recent publication of USP 797 (Pharmaceutical Compounding- Sterile Preparations) includes a requirement for the use of sterile cleaning products within the Primary Engineering Control (often referred to as to as the Hood ) for the process of cleaning and disinfecting these units. CLEANING, DISINFECTING, AND APPLYING SPORICIDAL DISINFECTANTS AND STERILE 70% IPA7.1Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Agents and Supplies for Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Applying Sporicidal Disinfectants7.1.1Â Â Â Â Â Agents: Cleaning and disinfecting agents must be selected and used with careful consideration of compatibilities, effectiveness, and user safety. Considerations when selecting and using disinfectants include their antimicrobial activity, inactivation by organic matter, residue, shelf life, preparation requirements of the agent, and suitability for surfaces being disinfected. After the disinfectant or sporicidal disinfectant is applied to the surface, the agent must be allowed to dwell for the minimum contact time specified by the manufacturer.Cleaning, disinfecting, and sporicidal agents used within the PEC must be sterile.
