2026/03 - 1 The Maritime Services and Coastal Agency is responsible for public passenger transport by water in Flanders. In this assignment, an operator is being sought for the Afsnee ferry service on the Leie, starting on August 1, 2026. Operating the Afsnee ferry service contributes to the mobility of local residents and other users. In Flanders there are several places where the rivers divide the landscape. The different ones take care of those places ferry services to connect pedestrians and cyclists, who would otherwise have to use cars and bridges along major roads to get from one bank to the other. By offering users an alternative to the car, the ferry connections contribute to the modal shift. The ferry service is also an added value for the recreational experience of the area in question. The Afsnee ferry carries approximately 38, 000 passengers every year. Today this is done through the use of ringing signal.
