Purpose of Assignment:The reliance on rainfall as the primary source of drinking water for the majority of rural communities in PNG means that they have increased vulnerability to the possible effects of climate change. In order to explore the possibility of alternative more reliable and safer watersources there is a need to understand the potential for sustainable groundwater exploration and exploitation in the country. This would include understanding the current situation with regards to the WASH Sector enabling environment, available data on groundwater and drilling sector capacity withinthe country. This assignment will provide research into the current status of groundwater exploration and exploitation in PNG and develop a road map for sustainable and effective groundwater development and governance. Data from this study will also help building a strong justification for financial support from other development partners and hence catalyze development of infrastructure to make groundwater resources available to vulnerable children and their families.ObjectivesThe following are the main objectives for the study:1. Conduct a desk review of available relevant information on hydrogeology, geological maps, groundwater atlas, meteorological data, existing water sources, drillings records and other sources to understand the overall potential of groundwater resource (exploration and exploitation) in PNG including the borehole drilling sector.2. Explore the possibility of usingnew technologies such as satellite imagery/GIS to map the potential and vulnerability of groundwater resources in PNG.3. To understand the status of management of the groundwater resource and regulation of the drilling sector in PNG.4. To develop an overview of the WASH Sector enabling environmentfor borehole drilling in PNG.5. Develop a road map for an effective groundwater exploration/exploitation and governance for resilience in PNG, which can be used for resources mobilization.
