BACKGROUND
Over the last two decades, Jordan has made notable progress towards greater access to formal education. The primary and secondary enrolment increased from 1.3 million in 1999 to 1.7 million in 2014, according to the UIS database[2]. Despite the progress, the education sector is subject to challenge in access and equity. The Syrian crisis, entering its eighth year, has a heavy toll on the education system in delivering quality learning opportunities to all children in Jordan. The influx of refugees has made classrooms and teachers overstretched in some host communities, thereby restricting quality teaching and learning for Jordanian and Syrian refugee children. An estimated 31 percent of Syrian school-aged children (5-17 years old) remains out of formal and non-formal education in and outside camps[3].
The Ministry of Education (MOE) in Jordan, along with the sector partners and donors, launched the Education Strategic Plan 2018-22 (ESP) in March 2018.
