Labo Space, the cooperation between the Department of Environment and the team of Vlaams Bouwmeester and a laboratory for complex spatial issues, started a new process of design research at the beginning of 2025 in which it was investigated how we can reconcile challenges in terms of affordable and quality living on the one hand, and in terms of space, climate and sustainability. This specifications embrace the assignment for the second phase of the "Affordable Living" research process (Affordable Living | Vlaams Bouwmeester) in which we want to unravel how affordable living can be designed for the Ghent-Winters-Lokeren City Region. The research also builds on the insights of the exploratory research: room for affordable living. Here we mapped the affordability challenges for Flanders, both to location and to target groups. Organization models are also discussed in more detail that extends beyond traditional rental and purchase formulas.
