The Department of Pharmaceutical Science and Biotechnology, TUS, request the supply of a Benchtop Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer. This is a semi portable instrument which enables unambiguous structural identification of many important chemicals used in the pharmaceutical industry. NMR spectroscopy is considered the gold standard in terms of structural identification of organic molecules. The benchtop NMR spectrometer contains a permanent magnet that is maintenance free. In order to analyse the structures, we require an instrument with a magnet size in the range 60-100 MHz for the fine detail in the spectra required to maximise its use. This instrument will be used by Department of Pharmaceutical Science and Biotechnology for teaching and research projects at Levels 6, 7 and 8 undergrad levels, and at MSc level (MSc in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Analysis and an MSc in Biopharmaceuticals). It will be used for research at MSc (by Research) and at PhD level in all aspects of Chemical Synthesis including Biocatalysis and in Chemical analysis. Chemical spectroscopy is an essential part of any Analysis or Pharmaceutical course. The NMR will be an integral part of any Spectroscopy modules. Research postgrads will be significantly advantaged by having access to a benchtop NMR.
