Tender Details

Expression of Interest are invited for Jordan - Read@Home Program Activities.

The escalation of learning poverty in the MENA region is further intensified by a lack of parental involvement in home-based literacy. The challenges of the Arabic language, including the disconnect between dialects spoken at home and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) used in schools, further contribute to poor reading outcomes. The impact of COVID-19 has highlighted the urgent need for structured literacy initiatives. The contrast between colloquial Jordanian Arabic spoken at home and the MSA of the educational system poses challenges for children entering formal education. Additionally, Jordan's role as a host to a large number of refugees adds complexity to the educational landscape, with diverse dialects and literacy needs.

Improving reading outcomes in Jordan requires addressing the limited parental engagement in reading to children, which is less common in the region compared to global practices. Addressing this gap is not only an educational issue but also crucial for national development, as literacy rates are closely linked to economic and social progress. The Read@Home program is thus a strategic response to this context, aiming to leverage family-based learning to create an environment that is favorable to learning. It aims to facilitate a smooth linguistic transition for children and fortify the foundations of educational practices within the Jordanian community.

The objective of this consultancy is to enhance home-based early literacy in Jordan by increasing parental engagement in children's literacy development and bridging the gap between colloquial Arabic and MSA used in schools.
