Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face persistent structural challenges that affect access to affordable and nutritious diets, including high dependence on imported foods, limited domestic production capacity, and vulnerability to external shocks and climate-related disruptions. These factors contribute to high and volatile food prices, making it increasingly difficult for households, particularly low-income groups, to afford healthy diets. Despite these challenges, most Pacific SIDS lack systematic mechanisms to monitor both the Cost of a Healthy Diet (CoHD) and its affordability, limiting the availability of robust, policy-relevant evidence to inform decision-making on food security and nutrition.To address this gap, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through its Statistics Division (ESS), is implementing an initiative aimed at establishing and institutionalizing national systems for the computation and dissemination of indicators on the Cost and Affordability of a Healthy Diet (CoAHD) across selected Pacific SIDS.
