The digital economy is becoming an increasingly important driver of economic growth globally as ict related technological developments diffuse across the enterprise base supporting the transformation of operational and business models. Indeed the contribution of the digital economy to the irish economy was estimated as €12.27 bn in 2015 (6% of gdp) and it was estimated that this would increase to €21.4bn by 2020. The analysis by indecon also estimates that direct employment in the digital economy will increase by approximately 50% between 2015 and 2020 (estimated at 107, 500 in 2020). Over the past 30 years or so, the development and adoption of individual ict technologies has brought about radical changes in production processes, services provisions and also across whole value chains and support activities of firms as well as driving the development of new markets . however, a new wave of advanced technologies such as: cloud computing; sophisticated sensors; the internet of things; high performance computing advanced automated and autonomous systems and collaborative robotics artificial intelligence big data capture and analysis; digital fabrication (including 3d printing); offer the potential to realise further disruptive change leading to increases in productivity growth, improved global competitiveness, increased innovation and exports and more and higher quality jobs. Here, we use the term ‘digitalisation-- to mean the use of these new wave of ict technologies and of data in order to create revenue, improve business (not just processes) and create a digital culture whereby digital information is at the core. There are many potential impacts arising from the digital transformation of industry and these will give rise to opportunities and challenges for all economic sectors of the economy. In this work, we require research and analysis services to develop an evidence base of the impacts, opportunities and challenges arising from the digitalisation of the manufacturing sector an
