The Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Department of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) has extensive experience in the development and production of PET tracers and its application in a pre-clinical and clinical research environment. The department has its ownCyclotron for the production of short-living PET-Isotopen, special radio-chemical laboratories for the development of tracers, a GMP facility for the production for human use, and state-of-the-art (pre-) clinical imaging equipment.
FDG (Fluor-18-Gefuoridated deoxyglucose) is aIndispensable radioactive tracer for PET diagnostics in the UMCG. It helps to detect and monitor oncological, neurological and cardiovascular disorders. Every year, approximately 7, 200 patient doses FDG are produced and used for diagnostics. Due to the aging population and an increaseThe demand for FDG PET scans is expected to increase from cancer diagnoses. This makes stable and reliable production of FDG essential for both patient care and scientific research.
Given the amount of patients numbers, the FDG production does not fall under magisterialPreparation, which is only permitted for small -scale productions without a commercial alternative. This means that the UMCG must comply with the rules for industrial production of medicines and therefore have the right permits.
