I. BACKGROUND
To ensure the protection of personal data and facilitate the free flow of information, the Philippines enacted the Republic Act No. 10173, otherwise known as the Data Privacy Act (DPA) of 2012, “An act protecting individual personal information in information and communications systems in the government and the private sector, creating for this purpose a National Privacy Commission, and for other purposes.”
The DPA protects the privacy of individuals while ensuring the free flow of information to promote innovation and growth; regulates the collection, recording, organization, storage, updating or modification, retrieval, consultation, use, consolidation, blocking, erasure, or destruction of personal data; and ensures that the Philippines complies with international standards set for data protection through National Privacy Commission (NPC).
