The exotic crayfish are a threat to biodiversity, WFD and Natura2000 targets. The lobsters cut and eat aquatic plants, cloud the water with their digging behavior and eat invertebrates and amphibian larvae. At high densities, lobsters can have a major negative impact on the biologyic functioning of surface waters. In addition, some burrowing species cause mechanical damage to banks. Lobsters thus impede the achievement of the WFD and Natura2000 targets.
An ecosystem approach to control crayfish has been developed for the Molenpolder that is globally bestout: further reduction of phosphorus load, stimulation of predation on crayfish by fish and grebe, restoration of submerged and emersed vegetation and structures.
Waternet wants to control this theoretical ecosystem approach and test crayfish in practice in the Molen polder.
