The 2021 Azerbaijan 2030: NationalPriorities for Socio-Economic Development commits the government to fostering aclean environment and green growth. This includes addressing climate changemitigation via the integration of renewable energy across all sectors of theeconomy based on green energy principles. Consistent with these priorities, Azerbaijan is focusing on the implementation of green technologies to harnessrenewable energy sources for current and future use. In 2022/23, Azerbaijan hasstarted promoting and implementing distributed solar photovoltaic (DPV)stations and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and has implemented taxand other incentive schemes to increase the deployment of private EVs whileembarking on a public electric bus program. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gasemissions, enhance energy security, and support sustainable economic growth. The targeted increase in electriccharging stations and distributed renewables introduces challenges andopportunities for electricity distribution networks. Benefits include reducedemissions, enhanced grid resilience, continuous electricity supply duringoutages, and improved supply security. However, challenges such as gridoverload accelerated ageing of assets, uncoordinated EV charging, andpower quality issues must be addressed urgently. The addition of additionalsupply and demand loads necessitate the digitalization and modernization of thedistribution systems to ensure the grid evolves while maintaining reliability, flexibility, and resilience.Digitalization of utility anddistribution grids offers transformative opportunities for Azerishiq, Azerbaijan's national electricity distribution company. Integrating digitaltechnologies can enhance operational efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, andbolster infrastructure resilience. Digitalization also supports increasedEV/DPV penetration and reducing emissions by:Providingbetter monitoring, control, and self-healing capabilities, reducing poweroutages, and improving o...
