H. Rationale / Background Brand is a label that carries meaning and associations by which consumers know a product, in terms of how it gives them satisfaction and delight thru its quality, features, related services. Brand equity is the value given by a consumer to a product brand. Brand equity development for an enterprise follows the process of developing identity, creating awareness, earning recognition, evolving loyalty, placing monetary values, diversifying into private retail labels and extensions.
Producing innovative and unique Philippine brands and increasing brand equity can help MSMEs cope with the transformation of the ASEAN into a single market.
Branding supports the Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022 Strategic Framework on Chapter 9: Expanding Economic Opportunities in Industry and Services thru -œNegosyo at Trabaho-, and contributes to the realization of the Philippine development long term vison in -œAmbisyon Natin 2040 - Matatag, Maginhawa, Panatag na Buhay-. The DTI Brand Equity Development (BrED) Program promotes the MSME Development Plan 2017-2022 strategy on expanding access to market (A2M) thru innovative and globally competitive brands that can successfully penetrate domestic and international markets.
Given the importance and urgency of developing brand equity for the Philippine MSMEs and their products, the DTI-BSMED embarked on a capacity building program for selected MSMEs in each region. For Region 8, the DTI has identified 27 MSMEs which are ready for branding. A number of these MSMEs have penetrated the international markets, while most are regularly supplying domestic and institutional buyers they have encountered through trade fairs and other DTI assistance. Recently, under the DTI-OTOP Next Generation Program and Gender Responsive Economic Actions for the Transformation of Women (GREAT Women) Project 2 (GWP2), the products of many of these MSMEs or WMEs have been enhanced through product development and subsidized participation in the Regional Bahandi Trade Fair, national trade fairs, and the elite Manila FAME. It is about time that these enterprises and their products be leveled-up with their own brands. This proposal shall introduce the MSMEs to the world of branding and allow them to enter the realm of branded products.
