ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION
IFC in collaboration with a private investor in Bhutan is planning to explore opportunities in export of high-value commodities from Bhutan to niche, developed markets such as US and the EU. IFC intends to undertake a diagnostic study to assess the competitiveness of two export-oriented, high-value commodities in Bhutan (and adjoining Himalayan areas in India and Nepal) - organic coffee, and aromatic herbs and essences. The study will also look into feasibility of investments in private-sector development in Bhutan in these high-value commodities, including a scan of the regulatory landscape promoting or hindering such investments, potential risks and mitigation measures. Finally, the study needs to also assess the supply-chains for these two high-value commodities from Bhutan including engaging with smallholders with a focus on developing a TA package for smallholder livelihood improvement, climate change resilience and gender inclusion.
