The Office of Innovation specifically looks to form partnerships around frontier technologies (like drones and UAVs, blockchain, 21st century skills, urban technologies, new banking tools, wearables and sensors, or 3D-Printing) that exist at the intersection of $100 billion business markets and 1 billion person needs - and to identify how they can grow and scale profitably and inclusively.
Our team

We're an interdisciplinary team around the world tasked with identifying, prototyping, and scaling new technologies and practices. With our partners, we focus on convening and collaborating on new and different solutions, low- and high-tech, by:
§ Looking at the 2-5 year horizon to evaluate emerging and trending technologies and to see how UNICEF can work with the private sector on doing better business while improving essential services for children;
§ Investing in early stage solutions that show great potential to positively impact children in the 0-2 year future including the Venture Fund that invests in open source technology solutions from start-ups based in UNICEF-s programme countries;
§ Identifying proven solutions that can be implemented at national scale in multiple countries - taking the ideas that help thousands in one country, bringing them to dozens of countries across multiple sectors, and impacting the lives of millions of children.
How can you make a difference?
The technology team within UNICEF Ventures works closely with other members of the team to productionize models and develop applications to make insights accessible to non technical UNICEF staff in the field. We constantly develop on new technologies, and therefore have a need to maintain old applications as we build out new ones.
UNICEF Ventures is looking to recruit a software developer to support ongoing work in its technology team, with a focus on building new prototypes and expanding features in existing platforms related to blockchain. The main responsibilities of these roles include:
· Provide guidance to Innovation Fund blockchain start-ups on software development
· Develop and implement user testing plans for existing and new prototypes of blockchain applications for UNICEF
· Explore programmatic applications of tokenisation
· Act as technical focal point on software development for internal stakeholders
· Documentation and communication
To qualify as an advocate for every child, you will have…
· A University degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or in other relevant areas.
· 2 years of professional experience
· Practical experience in developing software prototypes
· Practical experience in interacting with users and collecting user feedback on prototypes
· Technical experience in:
o Javascript front-end frameworks (React / Redux, Angular, etc)
o Languages: node.js, ruby, python, bash
o Cloud services: Azure, AWS, etc
o Geospatial DBs, libraries and data structures
o Sql and NoSQL database systems
o Experience with git, pull requests, and continuous integration and deployment.
o Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and run time optimization
o Experience with Hadoop based technologies e.g. Spark a plus
· Willingness to travel (sometimes on short notice) and develop software in the field, directly with end-users
· Open-source community active
· Fluency in English
Payment details and further considerations
· Monthly payment, based on monthly tasks and progress reports, approved upon monthly review with supervisor.
· Consultant is responsible for his/her own travel and health insurance
· Consultant is eligible for standard DSA for all work-related travel
· Consultant is eligible for roundtrip airfare to and from the duty station at the beginning and end of the assignment.
