While majority of countries have achieved set regional targets of COVID-19 vaccination coverage for HCWs, elderly and the entire population by mid-2022, Papua New Guinea is far behind in achieving the regional target due to challenges in vaccine delivery and vaccine hesitancy. The risk of large-scale COVID-19 outbreak with high morbidity, mortality and disability triggering the collapse of health services and systems is significantly increasing in Papua New Guinea.In addition, routine immunization performance in the country is significantly low due to a weak immunization system at provincial level and risking a resurgence of VPD outbreaks due to the population immunity gaps.
