Trafficking in persons (TIP) for the purpose of forced criminality (FC) to commit online scamsand financial fraud, particularly occurring in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and other areas of Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), and Myanmar (especially border areas controlled by armedgroups), as well as other destination countries (including Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand) hasemerged as a new and growing trend. TOC groups are capitalizing on rising young adult unemploymentand advances in information technology to expand these operations. Hundreds of thousands of victimsof TIP for FC from across the globe have been identified in scam compounds; overall, international NGOshave identified over 66 nationalities of trafficking victims in scam compounds in Southeast Asia.TIP victims are recruited through fraudulent job ads on social media platforms and online job searchplatforms, where there is little to no vetting, nominal verification of jobs posted, and few warnings aboutthe possibility of victimization through false job ads.
