Norfolk County Council is responsible for the maintenance of the Haven Bridge, and the maintenance and operation of the Herring Bridge, which are both twin-leaf lifting bridges located in the port town of Great Yarmouth. The Haven Bridge is operated by Peel Ports on behalf of Great Yarmouth Port Authority, who have a statutory obligation to operate the bridge for navigation. Haven Bridge was opened in 1930 but underwent a significant mechanical and electrical upgrade between 2021 and 2023. Herring Bridge was opened to traffic in February 2024. Existing contracts expire in February 2026 [Haven Bridge] and January 2027 [Herring Bridge]. The council is currently scoping requirements for the procurement of a replacement contract or contracts. It is anticipated that a single procurement exercise will be undertaken in respect of both bridges. Scope of the contract(s) is expected to include the following, but is subject to amendment as the specification is developed further.
