Under the Animal Protection and Control Act, the Government of Yukon may enter into agreements with caretakers in the Yukon who will provide temporary care and control of domestic animals (including livestock and companion animals) that are in the government-s custody. While there are several situations where an animal may be taken into custody, the most common reason is for an animal that is roaming, and its owner cannot be immediately identified. Often these animals have an unknown behaviour and medical history.
The Department of Environment seeks to understand:
who may be willing and available in the Yukon to provide caretaker services for domestic animals; the address of the caretaker-s facilities;the species of animal they can provide care for;a description of the caretaker-s facilities including the types of housing, pens or cages, the number of animals of each species the facility can accommodate at one time, if animals are housed in groups or separately; and the ability to quarantine or isolate animals at the facility; andthe daily cost for care of an animal, broken down by species if applicable. This work is projected to be completed within all communities and traditional territories across Yukon.
