1 Background Mikkeli's development company Miksei Oy (MikseiMikkeli) implements and manages the HINEE - Towards carbon-neutral cottages project. The project implementation period is 1 October 2025-30 September 2027. The HINEE project is co-financed by the European Union, the authority responsible for the funding is Southern Savo County Association. The HINEE project promotes the energy efficiency and carbon neutrality of leisure living in Etelä-Savo, the extension of stay in cottages and the use of local services, and improves the carbon balance of cottages in the sharing and circular economy with the help of solutions and by increasing the utilization rate. The project strengthens Etelä-Savo's position as a promoter of sustainable camping. More information about the project https://laiturilla.fi/hanke-esittellyEtelä-Savo, a province that is one of Finland's most popular cabin areas, is the same number of leisure apartments as permanent residential buildings, more than 45, 000. Almost 30, 000 of the province's leisure apartments are in the Mikkeli region. The most used forms of heating in holiday homes are wood and electric heating, and renewable energy sources are used according to reports, slightly less than 25% of the area's campers. Most of the energy consumption of holiday homes comes from heating. Year-round camping is increasing, the size and level of equipment of the cabins are increasing, and thus the energy consumption is increasing. What makes camping an exceptionally great vitality factor in Etelä-Savo is that approximately 66% of the province's holiday homes are owned by people from outside the province, i.e. people living outside the province.
