Description : Purpose of the Contract
Conduct a review and produce a report, in consultation with the National Referral Hospital s (NRH) Medical Training Committee (MTC), and MHMS HR setting out the scope of experience, competencies and skills expected of doctors who graduate the Solomon Islands Internship Training Program (SIITP) to adequately prepare them for practice in the Solomon Islands in line with principles of the Role Delineation Policy (RDP) and contribute to the development of a workforce plan for MHMS Doctors over the next 5-10 years.
Background
Traditionally, the Solomon Islands has sent medical students to regional countries (mainly PNG and Fiji) for medical training. A medical graduate of a Fiji medical school would come back to the Solomon Islands to complete a ‘Training Intern (TI) year, before commencing a 2-year internship (SIITP). A PNG graduate would complete a 2-year internship in PNG, and return as a registrar. Registrars who enrol in a post-graduate specialty training program (eg. obstetrics & gynaecology) train under regional supervision, with arrangements being slightly different and developed independently by each department. Registrars can also continue working as ‘general doctors in either the provinces, in Honiara public outpatients, private clinics, or as ‘service registrars at NRH (registrars who rotate through specialty jobs, but who are not enrolled in a specialty training program).
