This work is part of the Nepal Earthquake Housing Reconstruction Multi-Donor Trust Fund (MDTF), which was established to support the Government of Nepal-s Housing Reconstruction Program (HRP) following the 2015 earthquake and to strengthen long-term disaster resilience. In collaboration with the World Bank and international donors-including the governments of Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States-the MDTF provided financial and technical resources to help rebuild safer homes and offer socio-technical support.Over time, the MDTF expanded its focus to further enhance Nepal-s capacity for disaster resilience, addressing areas such as multi-hazard risk-assessment, resilient infrastructure, community preparedness, and disaster risk communication and awareness. In March 2023, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC), MDTF Development Partners, and the World Bank agreed to advance activities to reinforce disaster risk reduction and management systems in Nepal for longer-term resilience. As part of the ongoing dialogue with municipalities, local governments have requested support to enhance their risk communication capacity. They emphasized that community preparedness and awareness are significant challenges in implementing disaster risk management efforts. In response to this request, the MDTF is developing a series of games to communicate key concepts from the field of disaster risk management. The games should be designed to help participants understand key disaster risk concepts and to explore practical strategies for reducing disaster risk in Nepal.Systems games such as these have the capacity to act as flight simulators for decision-makers, helping to illuminate key trade-offs, support collaboration and negotiation, and develop skills in making decisions under time constraints.
