Tender Details

Tenders are invited for Advanced Manufacturing for Electric Propulsion Components of Low Earth Orbit Satcoms (Artes 4.0 at 4b.176).

The objective of the activity is to develop advanced manufacturing techniques for electric propulsion components in order to improve their performance.Targeted Improvements:Increase the thermo-mechanical, thermo-optical and magnetic performances by 10-15% and the sputter retention of electric propulsion components (e.g. anode, cathode, discharge chambers).Description: Large low Earth orbit satellite constellations will be using electric propulsion systems. Many electric propulsion components will have to be manufactured in relatively large production runs for many identical satellites to be produced. Advanced manufacturing processes will be competitive in the perspective of these series production runs. Many challenges (e.g. residual stresses) associated with the production of electric propulsion components with conventional processes could be improved using advanced manufacturing processes. Advanced manufacturing is a rapidly developing field and many processes, e.g. plasma/cold spraying, selective powder bed fusion (3D printing using laser, electron beam), ceramic moulding, vapour phase deposition, are proven production techniques. This activity will address the design of components of electric propulsion systems using advanced manufacturing processes to improve their performance (e.g. thermo optical properties, thermal conductivity, mass, residual stresses), whilst also reducing series manufacturing costs. After designing electric propulsion components and building them using advanced manufacturing processes, the component breadboard models will be tested. The relevant performances of new components/sub-assemblies will be compared with those of conventionally produced components/sub-assemblies. The reliability and the robustness of the advanced manufacturing processes for the industrialisation of the electric propulsion components will also be assessed.Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs).
