The purpose of this acquisition is to provide the most up-to-date and cutting-edge tools for The Functional MRI Facility (FMRIF) research customers by providing researchers with an Ultra High Field (UHF, where the MRI system-s main magnetic field is greater than 3 Tesla in strength) MRI system with a local gradient coil, that has approval for scanning human subjects, i.e. human safety release. As this hardware is ‘local-, and not ‘whole body- (as conventional systems tend to be), this coil can be operated much more rapidly and efficiently and so is much more suited for Echo Planar Imaging (EPI), the imaging technique most often used for Functional MRI (FMRI) research. Such tools will allow researchers to probe human brain function more reliably, potentially at both higher spatial and temporal resolutions.
