French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic. It is referred to as an overseas country, unofficially sometimes. The country is composed of atolls and 118 geographically dispersed islands stretching over a total area of more than 2,000 kilometers in the South Pacific Ocean. But out of those 118 atolls and islands only 67 are known to be inhabited. The total land area covered by French Polynesia is estimated to be 4,167 square kilometers. The country can be divided into 5 groups of islands, namely The Society Islands archipelago which is composed of the Leeward Islands and Windward Islands along with the Austral Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Marquesas Islands and the Gambier Islands. The most populous island is known by the name of Tahiti which is situated within the Society Islands. It is also the seat of the capital of the collectivity, Pape'ete. In spite of not being an integral part of its territory, French Polynesia has administrated Clipperton Island till the year 2007. A French Protectorate was established in the year 1842 when the French took over the islands. The establishment became an overseas territory in the year 1946 under the constitution of French Fourth Republic. The Polynesians were also granted the right to vote through citizenship. The French Establishment was renamed as French Polynesia in March; 2003.The GDP, as of 2008 of French Polynesia at market exchange rates was 7.14 billion US dollars, which was the sixth-largest economy in Oceania. In the year 2008, the GDP per capita at market exchange rates was $27,352. The country has a moderately developed economy and is dependent on tourism, imported goodsand the financial assistance provided by mainland France. Tourist facilities are available on major islands and are well developed. Also, people have been able to find jobs and opportunities in agricultural industry as as the noni fruit that are gown on these islands are discovered for its medicinal purposes. CFP Franc is the legal tender of French Polynesia. Fruits, vegetables, vanilla and coconut are the prominent productions of agriculture and the important natural resources include fish, cobalt and timber. As of 2008, the country’s import was recorded at 2.2 billion USD and the exports at 0.2 billion USD. The black Tahitian pearls are considered to be the major export of this country and accounted for almost fifty five percent of the total exports in the year 2008.
