Serbia is officially known as the Republic of Serbia. It is a sovereign state which is situated at the crossroads between Central as well as Southeast Europe. The country covers the part of the Pannonian Plain and the central Balkans. Serbia is a landlocked country and borders Hungary to its north, Bulgaria on the east along with Romania, Macedonia to the south and Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro to the west. Serbia also claims to share its border with Albania through the disputed territory of Kosovo. Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and is also one of the largest cities in Southeast Europe. The population of Serbia (excluding Kosovo) according to 2011 census had a total population of 7.2 million. Serbs established several states in the early middle ages following the Slavic migrations during the 6th century. The Serbian Kingdom got recognized in 1217 recognition by Rome and Constantinople and reached its peak in 1346 as Serbian Empire. By the middle of the 16th century, the entire territory of this country was invaded by the Ottoman Empire. In the year 2008 Serbias southern province, the parliament of Kosovo with an Albanian ethnic majority, declared independence and got mixed responses from the international community. Serbia is a member of OSCE, UN, COE, CEFTA and BSEC. The country is also an official candidate for membership in the European Union. Serbia is known to be an upper-middle income economy. The service sector of this country is quite dominant which is followed by the industrial sector and agriculture. The country has a high Human Development Index and ranks 77th in the world as of 2014. It is a medium-high Global Peace Index and ranks 52nd. The country has a market economy that is emerging as an upper-middle income range. As per International Monetary Fund, the nominal GDP of Serbia was estimated at $42.648 billion or $5,924 per capita whereas in terms of purchasing power parity GDP was $90.746 billion or $12,605 per capita. The economy of Serbia is dominated by services that are responsible for 60.3% of GDP which is then followed by industry with 31.8% of GDP and finally agriculture at 7.9% of GDP. Serbian dinar is the official currency and the central bank is National Bank of Serbia. The Belgrade Stock Exchange is known to be the only stock exchange in the country which has got a market capitalization of $8.65 billion. However in the year 2009, after enjoying eight years of strong economic growth, Serbia entered into recession.
