Portugal is a country which is located on the Iberian Peninsula, in southwestern Europe. It is known to be the westernmost country of mainland Europe and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west and by Spain to the east and north. Portugal holds sovereignty over the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira as well. They are both autonomous regions and have their own regional governments. The land within the borders of today’s Portugal has always been settled as well as fought over since the prehistoric times. By 1139, this country had established itself as a kingdom independent from León. In the 15th as well as 16th centuries, Portugal expanded western influence which led to establishment of the first global empire as the result of pioneering the Age of Discovery and as a result of which Portugal became one of the major economic, military and political powers. The Portuguese Empire was known to be the longest-lived of the modern European colonial empires as it spanned for almost 600 years and spread throughout a vast number of territories. These regions are now part of 53 different sovereign states and are also responsible for profound cultural and architectural influence across the globe and a legacy of over 250 million Portuguese speakers today. Since the 19th century, Portugals international status began to decline, setting in with the Independence of Brazil, finally in the year 1822. After the 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy, unstable Portuguese First Republic was established which was democratic in nature. Democracy was restored after the Carnation Revolution and the Portuguese Colonial War in 1974. Independence was granted to all its colonies after that. However, Macau was an exception and it was handed over to China in 1999. Portugal is known to maintain a unitary semi-presidential republican form of government. It is a developed country which has an advanced economy and very high living standards along with high-quality infrastructures.Portugal ranks 2nd as far as the quality of the road network is concerned.Apart from that, Portugal is a member of numerous international organizations such as the United Nations, the Eurozone, the European Union, OECD, NATO and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. Portugal is the first country in the entire world which is also known for having fully decriminalized the usage of all drugs in the year 2001. The Portuguese currency is the euro and it became so afterreplacing the Portuguese Escudo.
