Greece is officially known to be the Hellenic Republic and is located in southeastern Europe. According to the census that was carried out in the year 2011, the population of Greece was around 11 million. The capital of the country is Athens which is also the largest city. Thessaloniki is the second largest city of Greece and is also referred to as the co-capital of the nation. The country is located strategically at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and Africa and is situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula. Greece shares its borders with various countries such as Albania to the northwest, Turkey to the northeast and Bulgaria along with the Republic of Macedonia to the north. Greece comprises of nine geographic regions. Greece has the 11th longest coastline in the world and the longest on the Mediterranean Basin and the total area covered by the coastline is 13,676 km. Eighty percent of the country is mountainous. The history of this country can be traced back to its roots to the civilization of Ancient Greece which is considered the birthplace of democracy and the cradle of all the Western civilization along with the Olympic Games, Western Literature or Philosophy, Political Science, Historiography and major scientific and mathematical principles. The technological as well as cultural achievements that this country has acquired have in turn influenced the world to a great extent.As per the World Bank Statistics for 2013, the economy of Greece was considered the 43rd in terms of nominal gross domestic product and was estimated to be $242 billion US dollars and 52nd largest in terms of purchasing power parity which was recorded at $284 billion US dollars. In addition to that, the nation is also the 15th largest economy in the 27-member European Union. If per capita income of the country is taken into account, it ranks 40th or 38th in the world at $25,705 and $21,910 USD for PPP and nominal GDP respectively. The country is a developed country with a higher standard of living along with having high Human Development Index. The economy of Greece mainly comprises of the service sector at 85.0 percent, agriculture at merely 3 percent and industry at 12 percent of the national economic output. Some of the prominent Greek industries include tourism and merchant shipping. Greece is considered the 1th most visited country in the world and 7th most in the entire European Union by the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
