Finland is officially known as the Republic of Finland. The country is a Nordic country which is located in Northern Europe. Finland bordered by Norway to the north, Sweden to the west and Russia to the east. Across the south of Gulf of Finland, lies Estonia. The country is also a part of the geographic region of Fennoscandia that includes parts of Russia along with Scandinavia. In the year 2013, the population of Finland was around 5.5 million. Majority of the people lived in the southern regions. In terms of area, Finland is the eighth largest country in Europe. Finland is a parliamentary republic and its central government is based in the capital which is known as Helsinki. Greater Helsinki metropolitan area comprises of 1.4 million inhabitants and is also known for producing the third of the country’s GDP. Until the year 1809, Finland was a part of Sweden after which it was incorporated into the Russian Empire. However, in the year 1917, Russian Revolution prompted the Finnish Declaration of Independence led to the Finnish Civil War. The country became a republic after a brief attempt to establish a kingdom. In the year 1955, Finland joined the United Nations and established an official policy of neutrality. In 1969, Finland joined the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The country also became a part of the Eurozone at its inception in the year 1999 along with the European Union in 1995. Finland remained an agrarian country till the 1950’s and was introduced to industrialization much later. After building an extensive Nordic style welfare state, Finland rapidly developed into an advanced economy which led to widespread prosperity. The country also became one of the countries with the highest per capita incomes in the world. The country is also believed to be a top performed in innumerable metrics of nation performance such as economic competitiveness, education, civil liberties, human development and quality of life along with holding a long legacy in social progressivism. In the year 190, the country became the second nation to give full suffrage to the adult citizens. In 2010, Newsweek chose Finland was chosen the best country in the world in the year 2010 by Newsweek. In the World Human Capital index of May 2015, Finland ranked first. The economy of the country is highly industrialized mixed economy. Services constitute the largest sector of the economy at 66%, refining and manufacturing comprises at 31 percent. Manufacturing is the key economic trade and it yields maximum foreign investments as well.
