Sri Lanka is officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. It is an island country located in South Asia near south-east India. The country has maritime borders with India on its northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history can be traced back to some 3,000 years ago with evidence of pre-historic human settlements which dates back to at least 125,000 years. The geographic location of Sri Lanka and its deep harbourshave turned the countryinto great strategic importance through World War II from the time of the ancient Silk Road. Sri Lanka is known to be home to many religions, languages and ethnic groups. It can be termed as a diverse and multicultural country. In addition to the majority of Sinhalese residing here, it is also the home of large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils along with Malays, Moors, Burghers and Kaffirs. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage as well. The recent history of the country has been blemished by a thirty-year civil war that ended in the year 2009. Sri Lanka is a unitary ad a republic state which is governed by a presidential system. Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka and Sri JayawardenepuraKotte is both the largest city as well as commercial capital of the country. Sri Lanka is an important producer of tea, coffee, rubber, gemstones, coconuts and the native cinnamon. The island contains diverse landscapes and tropical forests with much biodiversity. Sri Lanka has shared a long history of international engagement along with being a founding member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, United Nations, the G77 and the Non-Aligned Movement. Sri Lanka is the only country in South Asia which is rated high on the Human Development Index currently. As per the International Monetary Fund, the GDP of Sri Lanka, in terms of purchasing power parity is second after Maldives in the South Asian region as far as per capita income is concerned. Sri Lanka has recorded a GDP growth of 8.3% as of 2011. Between the years 1948 to 1977, Sri Lanka was strongly influenced in terms of the governments economic policies by socialism. In the year 1977, the Free Market economy was introduced to the country. Along with the production and export of tea, coffee, rubber sugar and other commodities remained important, industrialization increased the importance of textiles, food processing, finance and telecommunications. The main economic sectors of Sri Lanka include tourism, clothing, tea export, rice production along with other agricultural products.
