Qatar is officially known as the State of Qatar. It is a sovereign country which is located in Southwest Asia and occupies the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It shares its land border only with Saudi Arabia on the south and the rest of its territory; the country is surrounded by the Persian Gulf. As of 2013, the total population of Qatars was estimated to be around 1.8 million out of which 278,000 are Qatari citizens and 1.5 million are expatriates. Qatar became a British protectorate in the beginning of 0th century after following Ottoman rule till it gained independence in 1971. Qatar is an absolute monarchy and it is considered to be the most conservative society in the Gulf Cooperation Council after Saudi Arabia. According to the constitution of the country, Sharia law is the main source of Qatari legislation. Qatar is known to be the richest country per capita in the world and has a high income as well as developed economy which is backed by the third largest natural gas reserves and oil reserves in excess of 25 billion barrels. Qatar is also considered to be an influential player in the Arab world as it supports various rebel groups. Qatar is likely to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. If it does, it would become the first Arab country to do so. The country has been identified as a middle power.The country has a high standard of living. With no income tax, it is also one of the countries with the lowest tax rates in the world. The unemployment rate as of June 2013 was only 0.1 percent. And as of 2014, the country was believed to have the highest GDP per capita in the world. Qatar depends heavily on foreign labour in order to grow its economy, to the extent that migrant workers constitute almost 94 percent of the workforce in the country and 86% of the population. The economic growth of the country has been based exclusively on its natural gas as well as petroleum industries which began in the year 1940. As per the study published by the Washington based Institute of International Finance, the per capita GDP at purchasing power parity of this country was $106,000 as of 2012, as a result of which the country managed to remain as the wealthiest nation in the entire world.
