The Philippines is officially known as the Republic of the Philippines. It is a sovereign island country located in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Philippines comprises of 7,107 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions such as Luzon, Mindano and Visayas. Manila is the capital city and Quezon City is considered to be its most populous city and both are a part of Metro Manila. Philippines shares its border by Taiwan on the north across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan, Vietnam lies west across the South China Sea along with Borneo lies on the southwest across the Sulu Sea. On the south, the Celebes Sea separates the country from other islands of Indonesia while it is bounded by the island nation of Palau and Philippine Sea on the east. However, owing to its location, Philippines isprone to earthquakes and typhoons. However the region is also laden with abundant natural resources. The country covers an area of approximately 300,000 square kilometers and considered to be the 64th-largest country in the world. The population of the country is about 100 million and Philippines is known to be the seventh-most populated country in Asia along with being 12th most populated country in the world. More than many ethnicities as well as cultures are found throughout these islands. 1521 marked the beginning of Spanish colonization in this region and 1565; the first Spanish settlement in the archipelago was established. The Philippines remained part of the Spanish Empire for more than 300 years which resulted in the dominance of Roman Catholicism in the country. Because of the large population size and economic potential of the country, it was classified as a middle power. Philippines is a founding member of the United Nations, East Asia Summit, World Trade Organization and Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The headquarters of the Asian Development Bank is also located here. The Philippines is considered to be a newly industrialized country as well as an emerging market which has been transitioning to being one based on services as well as manufacturing from the one based on agriculture. The economy of this country is known to be the 39th largest in the world with a gross domestic product estimated to be $289.686 billion as of 2014. The agriculture sector of the country employs 32 percent of the total labour force while the industrial sector employs around 14% of the workforce. Industrial sector constitutes 30% of GDP and agriculture, 14 percent.
