Palestine is a geographic region located in Western Asia between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. It is sometimes known to include adjoining territories. The region is also called the Land of Israel, the Holy Land or Promised Land. Palestine is located at a strategic location between Syria, Egypt and Arabia and known to be the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity. The region is also known for its tumultuous as well as long history as a crossroads for culture, religion, politics and commerce. This region is believed to be controlled by various people including Israelites, Egyptians, Persians, Ancient Greeks, Mongols, Romans, the British, Ottomans along with the modern Palestinians and Israelis. The boundaries of this country have changed throughout history. In recent times, the region comprises Palestinian territories along with the State of Israel in which the State of Palestine was declared. According to modern archaeology, 12 ancient inscriptions of the Assyrian and Egyptian records recording similar sounding names have been identified. Neither the Assyrians nor the Egyptian sources provided clear boundaries for the term and for their regions. In the 5th century BC Ancient Greece, the first clear use of the term Palestine has been referred to describing the entire area between Egypt and Phoenicia and the histories also included the Jordan Rift Valley and Judean mountains. The country was described in 1968 by the Palestinian National Covenant as the homeland of the Arab Palestinian people. Since the year 1988 and Palestinian Declaration of Independence, the term State of Palestine refers only to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The term “Palestine” is often used in a limited sense and mainly used to refer to the parts of the Palestinian territories that are currently under the administrative control of the Palestinian National Authority, Palestinian National Authority is a quasi-governmental entity which is responsible for governing parts of the State of Palestine. The British administered Mandatory Palestine after World War I, having promised to establish a homeland for the Jewish people. As per the Israels Central Bureau of Statistics, out of Israels 8.2 million people, 21 percent Arabs, 75% were Jews, and 4% others. As per the Palestinian evaluations recorded in 2014, the West Bank is inhabited by 2.7 million Palestinians, approximately and another 1.8 million in Gaza strip. On the basis of these estimates, it can easily be stated that the total population in the region of Palestine, as defined as Palestinian territories and Israel stands approximately at 12.7 million.
